Malfunctions

In this puzzle, clues begin at the numbered square and proceed in the direction indicated. (‘n’ is for “north”, etc.) Among these, 13 clues are experiencing malfunctions, requiring them to be modified before entry. The nature of these malfunctions is indicated cryptically by the otherwise unclued entry at 17e.

Additionally, 13 clues (including some malfunctioning clues) have an extra one or two consecutive words that must be ignored for the clue to parse. In each case, these one or two words provide a definition for one of the altered grid entries.

When the extra words in clue x are a definition for the modified grid entry at y, shade the cells numbered x, y, as well as the (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) path connecting them. The resulting image will show the source of the malfunctions, and the unclued entry at 19w provides a description of it.

Enumerations are given for grid entries. In all but one case, a malfunctioning grid entry will have a different length than the clue’s solution.

Press 2 to shade a cell; 1 to unshade. Clicking a cell multiple times will cycle through all clues whose entry passes through it. A plus sign indicates when a clue number has multiple clues.
